For families, entrepreneurs and businesses, a vehicle can represent much more than transportation. It may support a new job, a growing company, family mobility or a long-term investment. That is why vehicle shipping requires careful planning before the car ever reaches the vessel.

At Oteng Global Logistics, our goal is to make vehicle shipping from the United States to Ghana easier to understand by helping customers prepare their vehicles, organize documentation and follow the shipping process with confidence.

How Vehicle Shipping to Ghana Works

Most international vehicle shipments move by ocean freight. Depending on the vehicle, carrier and route, a vehicle may move by roll-on/roll-off service or inside a shipping container.

The smoothest vehicle shipments begin with accurate information before the vehicle is delivered for export.

Prepare Your Vehicle Before Shipping

Before the vehicle enters the international shipping process, confirm that its details match the paperwork. The Vehicle Identification Number, make, model and year are particularly important because vehicle information is also used during customs and duty assessment in Ghana.

A typical vehicle shipping journey:
  1. Confirm the vehicle details and Ghana destination.
  2. Prepare the vehicle title and required shipping/export documents.
  3. Deliver the vehicle or arrange transportation to the receiving location.
  4. Complete U.S. export and port processing.
  5. Load the vehicle for ocean transportation.
  6. Receive the Bill of Lading and shipment information.
  7. Prepare for customs clearance and applicable charges in Ghana.
  8. Complete destination release and collect the vehicle.

Documents You Should Keep Ready

Ghana Revenue Authority guidance identifies the Bill of Lading or Waybill and the vehicle Title among the key documents for vehicle clearance. Keeping shipping and ownership documents organized from the beginning can make the destination process easier to manage.

RoRo or Container Shipping?

Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping is designed for wheeled cargo that can be driven onto and off a vessel. It is commonly used for cars, SUVs, vans and trucks. Container shipping places the vehicle inside a shipping container and may suit customers who require a containerized transportation option.

The right method depends on vehicle condition, dimensions, route, carrier availability and current shipping rules. Customers should confirm the available service before preparing a vehicle for export.

Current Ghana Vehicle Import Requirements

Vehicle import requirements should be checked before a vehicle is shipped. Ghana Revenue Authority advises importers to make the necessary enquiries with relevant authorities before importing vehicles so they can avoid preventable clearance problems.

2026 update: Ghana Standards Authority announced mandatory compliance with applicable national vehicle standards from October 1, 2026. Used-vehicle importers should verify the latest standards before shipping a vehicle to Ghana.

Understanding Duties and Clearance

Ocean transportation charges and Ghana import duties are separate costs. Ghana Revenue Authority explains that vehicle duty assessment can involve factors such as the vehicle’s original manufacturer price, age-related depreciation, exchange rates, freight and insurance, with applicable charges also varying by vehicle characteristics.

For this reason, customers should verify the current customs assessment for their specific vehicle rather than relying on an old estimate for a different car.

Vehicle Arrival at Tema

Tema is Ghana’s largest port and an important gateway for international cargo. Once a vehicle arrives, destination procedures may include shipping-line release, customs processing, terminal procedures and applicable payments before release.

A Better Vehicle Shipping Experience Starts With Preparation

International vehicle shipping does not have to feel confusing. Confirming the vehicle details, preparing the correct documents, understanding the shipping method and checking current Ghana import requirements before departure can make the process easier to follow.

For Oteng Global Logistics, vehicle shipping is about helping customers move something valuable toward its next purpose — whether that is family transportation, business growth or a new opportunity in Ghana.
